Is tinnitus serious? For some, it really is. The constant ringing or chirping in the ears can be a serious detriment to people’s lives and keep them from enjoying anything. But is it dangerous? No. Generally tinnitus is not a sign of something detrimental to a person’s health. Having said that though, the constant ringing can have an effect on someone’s psyche, causing depression, anxiety, and a loss of hope. In that case, yes, tinnitus is serious.
Many people have to find ways to live with a never-ending sound. Imagine trying to sleep or focus at work with that. Because of this, it’s easy to get caught up in hopelessness, especially when the cure hasn’t been found. With tinnitus causing stress and anxiety and hopelessness, which then leads to more aggressive tinnitus, it’s a wonder people are able to function at all. Although there’s no cure, there are ways to manage it to the degree that it becomes minimal, allowing people to get back to their daily lives. Need proof? - Hearing aids – believe it or not, hearing aids benefit those with tinnitus greatly, especially with devices like Phonak’s Lyric. The device goes in the ear canal and doesn’t need to be removed for a few months, allowing the brain to receive constant soundwaves.
- Steady sound – especially at night as you fall asleep, it’s good to have a constant stream of sound such as waves crashing on a beach, wind blowing the trees, or even a babbling brook. Without that constant sound, tinnitus will be easier to focus on.
- Avoid causes – take note of what aggravates your tinnitus even more. For some people it might be caffeine and for others it might be alcohol. Just knowing your triggers will help you avoid them at all costs.
- Fight stress – one thing that exacerbates tinnitus symptoms is stress, which can be caused by the symptoms themselves. Stress management includes breathing exercises, calming activities, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
